Abstract

Obesity is the risk factor in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus. As body mass index increases, insulin resistance also increases resulting in elevated blood glucose levels. This study was conducted to investigate the association between body mass index and fasting blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus. The method used in this research was an analytical observational study using a cross-sectional design recruited 12 patients (5 males, 7 females) with type 2 diabetes by consecutive sampling method. Fasting blood glucose was measured after at least 8 hours of fasting. Body mass index is calculated by dividing the weight in kilograms to the square of the height in meters. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS. The result of this research indicated The body mass index was strongly positive and significantly correlated with fasting blood glucose ((r = 0.696, p = 0.012). The body mass index and fasting blood glucose levels were positively significantly correlated.
