POLITENESS STRATEGY USED BY THE STAFFS AND THE STUDENTS OF FAKULTAS SATRA-UMI MEDAN IN ACADEMIC SERVICES
This research deals with politeness strategy used by the staffs and the students of Fakultas Sastra-UMI in academic services, This research employs qualitative research aimed to describe the politess strategy applied by the staffs and the students of Fakultas Sastra-UMI. The theory used to analyze the data obtained is the theory proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987; Bald On Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, Off Record Strategy). The data obtained are taken from the conversations of the staffs and the students happening in the office of Fakultas Sastra-UMI. The number of the data is 11 (eleven) data. The findings show that the staffs and the students tend applying Strategy 4 (use in identity markers in speech) for positive politeness by using address terms such as dek, kak, and bang. The staffs apply Strategy 10 (offer, promise) for positive politess to response the students’ request. The situation of politeness found is greeting, requesting, and thanking.
